■■ 그림 설명
그들은 버스에서 훼리호로(ferry) 갈아타고(transfer) 출발했다. 길가에는 버드나무가 늘어져 있다. 물가의 논은 비옥한(fertile) 토양임을 자랑한다. 한 사람이 '나는 산보다 바다가 더 좋아(prefer).' 말하자, 다른 사람이 '산이든 바다든 난 관심없어(indifferent).'라고 무표정한 태도로 대답한다. 이 배는 요구르트 효소를(ferment) 먹어서 나오는 방귀로 나아간다. 다시 말해서 이 배의 엔진은 효소 엔진이다. 요구르트를 먹고 있는 남자가 효소가(enzyme) 무엇인지 물어보자 앞에 앉은 여자가 사전을 참고해 보라고(refer) 뒤로 넘겨준다. 배 아래의 물고기들은 방구냄새에 고통 받고(suffer) 있다.

■ Fussy God
The little boy's mother, when discipling him, used to say, "God would not like that," and the little boy really get out of hand, the other would say, "God will be angry."
Usually these reminders were sufficient.
But one evening the youngster rebelled - he would not eat the prunes provided for desert. He would yield neither to persuasion nor warnings.
Finally he was sent to bed with the reminder that "God will be angry."
Soon after the child had gone to bed, a violent thunderstorm arose and the mother went to her son's room to quiet him, expecting that he would be in terror at God's anger. But to her surprise she found him at the window, looking out on the terrible storm.
"It's an awful fuss to be making over a few prunes." the boy said to his mother.

■ 호들갑스런 하나님
어떤 꼬마의 어머니가 아들을 나무랄 때면 으레,
"너 그러면 하나님이 노하신다.“
고 했다. 보편적으로 이런 충고는 효력이 있었다.
그런데 어느 날 저녁 꼬마 녀석이 막무가내로 식사 후 디저트로 나온 자두를 먹으려 하지 않았다. 달래도 보고 윽박질러 보아도 소용없었다. 결국 어머니는,
“이제 하나님이 노하실 게다.”
하고 꾸짖어서 꼬마를 잠자리로 보냈다.
꼬마가 자러 들어간 잠시 후 무서운 뇌성 폭우가 쏟아지자 어머니는 어린 아들이 하나님의 노여움에 그만 대경실색했을 것으로 생각하고 진정시켜 주려는 마음에서 아이의 방으로 가 보았다. 그러나 그녀는 꼬마가 창가에서 무서운 폭우를 내다보고 있는 것을 발견하고 놀라지 않을 수 없었다.
“겨우 자두 몇 개 가지고 이렇게 큰 소동을 피우다니, 원.”
꼬마가 엄마에게 하는 말이었다.
